Key Developments from the Chambers UK 2025 Guide Launch

Chambers UK has just launched its 2025 guide, the most comprehensive yet, offering invaluable insights into the UK legal market. This year’s guide introduces over 200 new department recognitions and a 6.5% increase in lawyer rankings, with more than 600 new entries, 370 of which are women. With 57,000 responses and seven months of research, Chambers continues to set the gold standard for legal rankings.

New Initiatives and Market Trends

One of the standout updates in this release is Chambers’ growing focus on gender diversity. Over the past three years, they’ve added over 1,000 women to their rankings and have nearly closed the gap to a 60/40 ratio of ranked men to women. In addition, Chambers has enhanced its ability to highlight niche firms through the introduction of new tables, such as SME-focused firms and dispute resolution specialists.

The SME-focused category is a significant addition. It’s aimed at recognizing firms that excel in serving small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), a client base that’s seen a 24% rise since 2010. These firms often cater to very different needs compared to larger corporations, and Chambers is now offering more targeted rankings to reflect this. More about the SME-focused table in our previous blog post https://tieronerankings.com/introducing-chambers-uks-new-opportunity-for-sme-focused-law-firms/.

Refined Categories and Sector Focus

Chambers is also introducing more refined categories to better address changes in the legal market. For instance, the decline of PFI and PPP projects has led to a shift towards two key categories: “Projects Domestic” and “Projects International,” which streamline Chambers’ recognition of project-related work.

At the same time, the guide has discontinued less active categories such as Retail: Corporate & Competition and Aviation: Commercial, reflecting evolving market priorities.

AI-related legal work has also become a central theme in this year’s submissions. More firms are now engaged in AI governance, data protection, and intellectual property issues. Chambers’ analysts noted a surge in AI-related cases across multiple sectors, reflecting the technology’s growing influence on business strategy and legal frameworks.

Litigation Market and Future Rankings

Chambers has also highlighted shifts in the litigation market, with a new table for dispute resolution specialist firms. Litigation boutiques have been on the rise, offering personalized service at competitive rates. This year’s guide shines a light on 15 firms in this growing space.

Additionally, for the UK 2026 guide, Chambers will be expanding its ranking criteria by asking firms to provide 20 referees, particularly in the SME-focused category. This will offer deeper insight into what makes a firm an ideal fit for SME clients and help expand the rankings in this area.

Upcoming Awards and Looking Ahead

Chambers also announced its inaugural UK Solicitors Awards, set for February 13, 2025. These awards will recognize the top-performing legal teams in over 20 categories, ranging from finance to pro bono work, and will be a major event to watch for industry leaders.

Chambers continues to evolve alongside the UK legal market. By expanding its categories and adapting its research methods, the guide ensures that it remains a vital resource for firms and clients alike. With the legal landscape shifting rapidly—thanks to factors like AI, gender diversity, and SME growth—Chambers UK’s rankings reflect not only the best firms today but also those leading tomorrow’s trends.

Applying to Chambers can be daunting, especially for small firms. The process of compiling 20 work highlights and securing 20 referees can be time-consuming and challenging. Additionally, many small firms find themselves unable to compete with larger entities in terms of resources, despite providing excellent service to their clients.

Recognizing these hurdles, Chambers has introduced a new opportunity tailored specifically for SME-focused firms – the SME-focused Firms section.

This innovative section offers a streamlined submission process that focuses more on a firm’s client base rather than individual work highlights. Notably, Chambers is not requiring client referees for this category this year.

This category is designed to provide a platform for firms that may not have the same resources as larger competitors but have a roster of satisfied clients whom they support on a variety of issues, including corporate matters, disputes, financing, restructuring, and tax.

Unlike traditional submissions, which typically require 20 unique work highlights, the SME-focused Firms section requests firms to describe their relationships with ten key clients they regularly work with. This approach aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the firm’s practice while reducing the burden of compiling extensive documentation.

Open to firms across the UK, including Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, it is nonetheless important to note that firms with three or more department rankings in Chambers UK are not eligible for this category.

If your firm fits the criteria and would like to apply, submissions are open until April 17th.

Yesterday, December 5, marked the launch of Chambers & Partner’s 2024 Fintech guide.

The occasion was marked with a short webinar revealing some intriguing and up-to-date trends and developments in the Fintech sector.

Here are the key points:

Global Investment Trends in Fintech:

There has been a decline in funding in the Fintech sector globally and a fall in deal volume, according to data from the KPMG Pulsar Fintech report. This includes a decrease from $63.2 billion in H2 2022 to $52.4 billion in the H1 2023, and a reduction in deal numbers from 2,885 to 2,153 in the same periods.

Shift in Business Models:

UK-based Fintech companies are shifting their focus from seeking high venture funding rounds to forming partnerships with traditional financial institutions. This includes minority investment deals and joint ventures.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Fintech:

There is considerable excitement about the potential of generative AI in Fintech, particularly in savings and investment products, known as “Robo Advisor 2.0.” AI could offer tailored investment advice and financial planning at lower costs. However, concerns were raised about trust, safety, and oversight in the use of AI in financial services.

Regulation of AI and Digital Payments in the EU:

The EU is introducing significant regulations like the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA) and the third Payment Services Directive (PSD3), focusing on cyber security, combating online fraud, and facilitating open banking and digital payments.

Cyber security Resilience:

The growing threat of cyber-attacks in the Fintech sector, including threats from state-sponsored groups, is a major concern. There’s a focus on strengthening cyber security risk management.

Cryptocurrency Regulation:

The lack of legislative clarity in the U.S. regarding cryptocurrency regulation contrasts with the EU and UAE’s more structured approaches. The U.S. is currently seen as regulating through enforcement actions by bodies like the SEC and CFTC.

Crypto Asset Disputes:

There’s a growing legal focus on cryptocurrency disputes, regulatory investigations, and bankruptcy cases. The number of U.S. firms involved in such cases has increased significantly.

Today marks the launch of Chambers & Partner’s 2024 UK coverage, following on from The Legal 500 which launched its UK guide on October 04th. Chambers marked the occasion with an approximately 20-minute webinar, revealing some intriguing statistics and trends.

Overall, 5,500 individual departments were recognised, with 13,000 lawyers ranked on an individual basis, this marks an increase of 220 newly recognised practices and 834 additional lawyers.

Firms who have been submitting for years to no avail will have taken heed of the example of US-headquartered Armstrong Teasdale who, after numerous years of participating, received its first ever recognition in the UK via a ranking for its sports department. Evidently, a story reminding firms that persistence, and a desire to improve on submissions each year, can pay off.

Likewise, Chambers provided the example of Mann & Co which received a ranking upon its very first submission. The message all-around was that most firms were being recognised than ever, and that no outfit should be deterred from submitting, evident through the anecdote that numerous boutiques had received recognition for the first time.

Chambers also announced that it will be adding new SME-focused tables to its 2025 edition, a move which will no doubt continue the theme of increased focus for smaller- and mid-sized firms who will have noted that, in place of the usual suspects, it was actually Hill Dickinson, DWF and Foot Antsey who received the most newly ranked individual lawyers this year.

The door is certainly open to firms who may not involved in multi-million transactions, or act for household names, so long as they can clearly convey why their work is of significance beyond sheer matter value or profile.

The market leading directory also extended its welcome to female lawyers, who were noted to now outrank males by approximately 1/3 in the Up-and-Coming rankings. While it will likely take many years for the legal industry’s more inclusive trends to be represented at the more senior levels, Chambers did note that the 60/40 barrier was close to being broken, with 505 of the 834 newly ranked names being female.

Evidently, The Legal 500 and Chambers’s recent encouragement for firms to put forward more female lawyers is paying dividends, though firms still need to do more and ensure that candidates are properly and fairly advocated, namely through sufficiently exhibited work.

Chambers noted that its market research had been informed by more firm interviews than ever, along with 54,000 market responses from referees. Firms will have been reminded that the directory process is threefold between a strong submission, an insightful follow up interview, and a large, illuminating exhibition of client endorsements.
